Melanie, my BFF, made both the garter AND the shrug that I’m wearing in the photo above. That’s right, folks: She knitted me a sweater to go with my wedding dress, then somehow found time to knit a garter to match. That, my friends, is real ladyfriend love. See if Melanie and her talents had gone back in time, my grandmother might have permitted my mother to include the garter ritual. Because that garter, man…it's pretty spectacular and deserves to be visible. Sadly, unless Melanie knits a time machine, my grandmother will have died without reconsidering the vulgarity of the bridal garter. But if anyone can knit a time machine, it's frickin' Melanie.
I (along with my MOH) made our flower bouquets. I can't recommend doing this enough — not only did I get the exact flowers I wanted, it was so easy and I saved a TON of money.
The only DIY I did was making our programs. Kate's Paperie paper, ribbon, and an Internet template with a color photo of the gold Puck from the Puck Building made for cheap, beautiful programs! Whether the explanation of Jewish wedding traditions was 100% accurate, we will never know. ;)
I had so many DIY elements, it got a little out of control. I hand made all 55 invitations and corresponding paper goods… thank you's, rsvps, etc. I also made my bridesmaids necklaces and the flower girls hair pins. The night before the wedding (seriously!) Oh yeah, and I hand carved the outter stamp for the envelopes. I even sat there and embossed every single one too! The things we do for weddings.
I mainly make mixes for any significant other. I did make a huge elaborate illustrator design for a female friend recently.

@Lindsay: We did that too! We also had people cut flowers for centerpieces from the garden as they made their way into dinner.
